AFRICAN BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY COUNCIL

about the African Business Sustainability COUNCIL

Driving Sustainable Business Leadership for Africa's Future

An Initiative of the African CEO Council

Executive Profile

The African Business Sustainability Council (ABSUC) is a pan-African, multi-stakeholder membership organization established by the African CEO Council (ACC) to promote sustainability leadership, responsible business practices,  environmental stewardship, social impact, and good corporate governance  across Africa.

ABSUC provides a high-level platform  where companies, financial institutions, development partners,  government agencies, academia, professional associations, and civil  society organizations collaborate to accelerate the transition toward a  more sustainable, resilient, and competitive African economy.

The Council serves as a regional  centre of excellence for sustainability by facilitating executive  leadership, capacity building, policy dialogue, research, innovation,  peer learning, and strategic partnerships. Through its programmes and  networks, ABSUC supports organizations in integrating sustainability  into corporate strategy, improving Environmental, Social and Governance  (ESG) performance, strengthening climate resilience, and contributing  meaningfully to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and national development priorities.

Context

Africa stands at a defining moment  in its development journey. The continent has one of the world's  youngest populations, abundant natural resources, expanding markets, and  significant opportunities for industrialization and technological  innovation. At the same time, it faces major challenges, including  climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, energy  insecurity, unemployment, infrastructure gaps, food insecurity, water  stress, and increasing expectations for corporate transparency and  accountability.

Investors, regulators, consumers,  employees, and international markets increasingly expect businesses to  demonstrate responsible environmental, social, and governance  performance. Companies that embed sustainability into their operations  are generally better positioned to manage risk, improve operational  efficiency, attract investment, strengthen stakeholder trust, and remain  competitive in global markets.

Despite growing awareness, many  organizations across Africa continue to face barriers to implementing  sustainability strategies, including limited technical expertise,  inadequate access to ESG financing, fragmented policy environments,  shortages of trained professionals, and insufficient collaboration  across sectors.

The African Business Sustainability  Council has been established to address these challenges by providing a  collaborative platform that equips organizations with the knowledge,  partnerships, tools, and leadership needed to embed sustainability into  business strategy and practice.

Background

Sustainability is no longer viewed  solely as a corporate social responsibility activity; it has become a  core business imperative. Across the world, leading companies are  integrating sustainability into governance, operations, investment  decisions, supply chains, and long-term business planning.

Africa's private sector has a  critical role in supporting inclusive economic growth, reducing  environmental impacts, promoting decent work, advancing innovation, and  improving community well-being. However, progress requires stronger  collaboration between business, governments, financial institutions,  academia, development partners, and civil society.

The African Business Sustainability  Council was conceived as a continental platform that brings these  stakeholders together to accelerate learning, collaboration, and  practical action while supporting companies of all sizes in adopting  internationally recognized sustainability practices.

Rationale

The establishment of ABSUC is driven by several priorities:

  • Increasing investor demand for robust ESG performance and transparent reporting.
  • Growing regulatory expectations regarding environmental protection, climate risk, governance, and responsible business conduct.
  • The need to improve the competitiveness of African companies in international markets.
  • Expanding opportunities in sustainable finance, green investment, and climate finance.
  • The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2063, and AfCFTA.
  • The need to build local sustainability expertise and leadership.
  • The importance of sharing best practices and fostering innovation across industries.
  • The opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the private sector and development institutions.

ABSUC aims to close these gaps by serving as Africa's premier business sustainability network.

Vision

To become Africa's leading business  sustainability network, advancing responsible leadership, environmental  stewardship, and inclusive economic development across the continent.

Mission
