The African Board Leadership Forum (ABLF) is a pan-African professional membership forum established by the African CEO Council to bring together board chairpersons, executive and non-executive directors, independent directors, trustees, company secretaries and senior governance leaders from African private enterprises, public institutions, state-owned enterprises and nonprofit organisations.
The Forum provides a trusted platform for continuous director development, peer learning, governance thought leadership, boardroom resources, professional networking and collective engagement on issues affecting boards across Africa. It promotes competent, ethical, diverse, accountable and future-ready boards capable of guiding resilient organisations and creating sustainable value.
The concept is broadly comparable in purpose to established professional director associations, including the National Association of Corporate Directors in the United States, but it is designed specifically for Africa’s legal systems, ownership structures, development priorities, regulatory environments and institutional realities. The African Board Leadership Forum is an independent African initiative and does not represent itself as a chapter, affiliate or authorised representative of any external organisation unless a formal relationship is subsequently established.
Institutional Profile and Positioning
The African Board Leadership Forum operates as a specialist membership initiative of the African CEO Council. Its identity is professional, nonpartisan, cross-sectoral and pan-African. It serves both private-enterprise and public-organisation boards while maintaining strong safeguards for independence, confidentiality and ethical conduct.
The Forum does not function as a regulator, directors’ trade union or commercial board-placement agency. Its principal role is to develop directors, strengthen boards, convene leaders, produce governance intelligence and promote responsible institutional stewardship.
Vision
To become Africa’s leading professional community for board leadership, governance excellence and responsible institutional stewardship.
Mission
To strengthen the competence, integrity and effectiveness of African boards by providing directors with continuous education, trusted peer networks, practical governance resources, thought leadership and opportunities for cross-border collaboration.
Overall Goal
The overall goal is to improve the quality of board leadership and institutional governance across Africa, thereby contributing to stronger organisations, greater investor and public confidence, sustainable enterprise growth and improved development outcomes.
