Upholding the Highest Standards of Integrity, Leadership and Corporate Excellence
The African CEO Council is founded on the principles of integrity, accountability, transparency, professionalism, and responsible leadership. We believe that ethical conduct is the cornerstone of sustainable business success and a prerequisite for building trust among our members, governments, investors, development partners, employees, customers, and the wider society.
As Africa's premier network of chief executives and business leaders, the Council is committed to promoting the highest standards of corporate governance, ethical business conduct, environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and professional excellence. These principles guide every aspect of our governance, operations, programmes, partnerships, and member engagements.
Our Ethical Responsibilities provide the framework through which the Council and its members conduct business, make decisions, engage stakeholders, and contribute to sustainable economic development across Africa.
The Council encourages every member organization to adopt internationally recognized standards of ethical leadership and corporate responsibility while continuously strengthening their governance systems, organizational culture, and business practices.
Our Ethical Commitment
The African CEO Council is committed to fostering a culture of integrity, fairness, transparency, accountability, respect, and professionalism throughout its operations and among its membership.
To achieve this commitment, the Council promotes three fundamental pillars of ethical leadership.
Three Fundamental pillars of Ethical Leadership
Professional Responsibility
The Council encourages all members, officers, employees, partners, consultants, and volunteers to demonstrate the highest standards of integrity, competence, objectivity, and professionalism in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that enhances the reputation of their organizations, the Council, and the African private sector while promoting ethical leadership and responsible business practices.
Responsible Business Operations
The African CEO Council is committed to conducting its affairs in accordance with sound corporate governance principles and internationally accepted standards of accountability, transparency, financial stewardship, and institutional integrity.
The Council continually develops and implements policies that promote ethical procurement, responsible financial management, environmental sustainability, stakeholder engagement, diversity and inclusion, data protection, risk management, and organizational accountability.
The Council encourages every member organization and individual member to subscribe to and uphold the African CEO Council's Code of Professional Conduct.
This Code establishes the ethical standards expected of all members and serves as the foundation for responsible leadership, professional excellence, mutual respect, and sustainable business conduct.
Members are expected to champion ethical decision-making within their organizations and contribute positively to the advancement of responsible enterprise across Africa.
Our Professional Responsibilities
As Africa's leading business leadership organization, the African CEO Council promotes the following principles of professional conduct:
Integrity and Honesty
We conduct all our activities with honesty, integrity, fairness, and professionalism.
We communicate truthfully, present information objectively, avoid misrepresentation, and ensure that our decisions are based on credible evidence, sound judgment, and the highest ethical standards.
Independence and Objectivity
We exercise professional independence in our decision-making and remain objective in the performance of our responsibilities.
Personal interests, political affiliations, financial considerations, or individual beliefs shall never compromise our professional judgment or the impartiality of our work.
Transparency and Accountability
We are committed to openness, transparency, and accountability in all aspects of governance, financial management, programme implementation, stakeholder engagement, and organizational reporting.
We recognize that public trust is earned through responsible leadership, ethical behaviour, and prudent stewardship of resources.
Respect for Human Rights
The African CEO Council fully supports internationally recognized human rights principles and believes that every business has a responsibility to respect, protect, and promote human dignity.
We encourage our members to provide safe, inclusive, equitable, and respectful workplaces that eliminate discrimination, child labour, forced labour, harassment, exploitation, and all forms of abuse.
We promote equal opportunity, diversity, inclusion, and respect for cultural differences throughout our membership and partnerships.
Sustainable Development
We believe that sustainable economic growth can only be achieved when business success is balanced with environmental protection, social progress, and responsible governance.
Accordingly, we encourage our members to integrate sustainability into corporate strategy, investment decisions, operational practices, and long-term business planning.
Environmental Stewardship
The Council promotes responsible environmental management and encourages businesses to minimize environmental impacts while improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources, and supporting climate action.
Members are encouraged to adopt sustainable production systems, renewable energy solutions, circular economy practices, and internationally recognized Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards.
Equity and Social Inclusion
We recognize that economic development should benefit all segments of society.
The Council encourages businesses to promote gender equality, youth empowerment, disability inclusion, community development, and equitable access to economic opportunities.
Special consideration is given to vulnerable communities and historically disadvantaged groups to ensure that development is inclusive and sustainable.
Respect for Future Generations
The African CEO Council recognizes its responsibility to future generations.
We therefore encourage long-term thinking, responsible investment, sustainable resource management, climate resilience, and business practices that preserve environmental and economic opportunities for those who will inherit Africa's future.
Professional Excellence
We strive for excellence in everything we do.
The Council encourages continuous learning, executive development, innovation, knowledge sharing, professional certification, leadership development, and institutional capacity building.
Members are expected to maintain the highest standards of competence while investing in the growth and development of their employees, colleagues, and future business leaders.
Responsible Leadership
Leadership carries both privilege and responsibility.
Members of the African CEO Council are expected to lead with courage, humility, accountability, integrity, and vision while inspiring ethical behaviour throughout their organizations and industries.
Responsible leaders place the interests of their stakeholders, communities, employees, investors, customers, and society alongside financial performance.
Avoidance of Conflicts of Interest
Members shall avoid situations in which personal, financial, political, or organizational interests conflict with their professional responsibilities.
Any actual or perceived conflict of interest shall be disclosed promptly and managed transparently in accordance with the Council's governance policies.
Zero Tolerance for Corruption
The African CEO Council adopts a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, fraud, bribery, money laundering, extortion, unethical procurement, abuse of office, and all forms of financial misconduct.
Members are expected to implement effective compliance systems, internal controls, whistleblower protections, and anti-corruption measures that strengthen public confidence and promote responsible business practices.
Respectful Conduct
The Council promotes mutual respect, professionalism, civility, and constructive engagement in all interactions.
We do not tolerate harassment, intimidation, discrimination, bullying, abuse, violence, or any behaviour that undermines human dignity or creates unsafe working environments.
Every member is expected to contribute to a culture of collaboration, respect, and professionalism.
The African CEO Council believes that ethical leadership is fundamental to building resilient businesses, attracting investment, strengthening corporate reputation, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing Africa's global competitiveness.
By becoming a member of the Council, every organization and individual commits to upholding these ethical principles and to serving as ambassadors of responsible business leadership across Africa.
Together, we will cultivate a business community founded on integrity, transparency, accountability, sustainability, innovation, and excellence—one that contributes meaningfully to Africa's economic transformation, social progress, environmental stewardship, and long-term prosperity.
Our commitment to ethical leadership is not simply a statement of values; it is the foundation upon which the African CEO Council will build one of Africa's most respected, trusted, and influential business leadership institutions.
