AFRICAN BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT

WHY SUSTAINABLE FINANCE SUMMIT?

About the African Sustainable Finance Summit

Sustainable finance is the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into financial and investment decision-making to generate long-term economic value while promoting environmental protection, social inclusion, and sound corporate governance.

It goes beyond traditional financing by ensuring that capital is directed toward investments that support sustainable economic development, climate resilience, responsible business practices, and inclusive prosperity. Sustainable finance recognizes that financial returns and sustainable development are mutually reinforcing and that long-term investment decisions must consider not only economic performance but also environmental stewardship and social impact.

Environmental considerations include climate change mitigation and adaptation, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, pollution prevention, water resource management, sustainable agriculture, resource efficiency, the circular economy, and the transition to low-carbon economies.

Social considerations encompass human rights, labour standards, gender equality, diversity and inclusion, youth empowerment, health and safety, community development, financial inclusion, poverty reduction, education, skills development, and equitable access to economic opportunities.

Governance considerations relate to ethical leadership, transparency, accountability, anti-corruption measures, board effectiveness, risk management, regulatory compliance, responsible executive remuneration, stakeholder engagement, and effective corporate governance structures that inspire investor confidence and institutional resilience.

For Africa, sustainable finance is a powerful catalyst for accelerating economic transformation by mobilizing capital for productive investments while supporting the achievement of the African Union's Agenda 2063, the African Continental Free Trade Area, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable finance encompasses green finance, climate finance, impact investing, blended finance, social finance, sustainable infrastructure finance, ESG investing, carbon markets, nature-based financing, and innovative financial instruments that enable businesses, governments, and communities to transition toward resilient and sustainable economies.

Summit Background

Africa stands at a defining moment in its economic development. With one of the world's youngest populations, expanding regional markets, abundant natural resources, increasing digital innovation, and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the continent possesses enormous opportunities for sustainable growth and investment.

However, African economies continue to face significant financing challenges. Climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, infrastructure deficits, limited access to long-term capital, high financing costs, economic shocks, geopolitical uncertainty, and persistent financing gaps continue to constrain sustainable development and private sector growth.

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which account for the majority of businesses and employment across Africa, remain particularly affected by limited access to affordable finance despite their significant contribution to economic growth, innovation, industrialization, and job creation.

At the same time, institutional investors, commercial banks, development finance institutions, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, philanthropic organizations, and impact investors are increasingly seeking sustainable investment opportunities that generate both financial returns and measurable environmental and social impact.

These developments present an unprecedented opportunity to reposition sustainable finance as a strategic driver of Africa's economic transformation.

Recognizing this opportunity, the African CEO Council (African Council of Chief Executives) is convening the African Sustainable Finance Summit (ASFS) to provide Africa's premier platform for dialogue, collaboration, investment mobilization, policy engagement, and knowledge sharing on sustainable finance and responsible investment.

The Summit will bring together financial institutions, investors, governments, regulators, multilateral organizations, development finance institutions, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, academics, and development partners to develop practical solutions that mobilize capital for sustainable development while strengthening Africa's financial ecosystem.

Rationale

Despite growing global interest in ESG investing and sustainable finance, Africa continues to receive only a modest share of global sustainable investment flows.

Many businesses, financial institutions, governments, and investors face challenges including:

  • Limited access to sustainable and affordable finance.
  • Weak ESG reporting and disclosure frameworks.
  • Insufficient climate finance.
  • Limited investment in renewable energy and green infrastructure.
  • Underdeveloped carbon markets.
  • Limited access to blended finance mechanisms.
  • Financing constraints affecting SMEs and entrepreneurs.
  • Weak sustainable capital market ecosystems.
  • Limited awareness of sustainable investment opportunities.
  • Inadequate collaboration between governments, investors, and the private sector.

The African Sustainable Finance Summit seeks to address these challenges by creating a high-level continental platform that promotes collaboration, mobilizes investment, strengthens policy dialogue, builds institutional capacity, and accelerates the transition toward sustainable financial systems.

Goal

To mobilize sustainable finance, strengthen responsible investment, and promote innovative financing solutions that accelerate Africa's transition toward resilient, inclusive, low-carbon, and sustainable economies.

Summit Objectives

The Summit seeks to:

  • Promote sustainable finance as a strategic driver of Africa's economic development.
  • Mobilize public and private investment for sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, SMEs, and green industries.
  • Strengthen Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) integration within Africa's financial sector.
  • Facilitate partnerships between governments, investors, financial institutions, development partners, and businesses.
  • Promote innovative financing mechanisms including blended finance, impact investing, green bonds, sustainability-linked finance, and climate finance.
  • Improve access to finance for SMEs, women-owned enterprises, youth entrepreneurs, and innovative start-ups.
  • Strengthen sustainable capital markets across Africa.
  • Promote financial inclusion and digital financial services.
  • Encourage responsible corporate governance and ethical investment practices.
  • Support implementation of Agenda 2063, the AfCFTA, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
