AFRICAN SUSTAINABLE FINANCE SUMMIT

Profile of the SUmmit

Purpose and background

Africa stands at a pivotal moment in its development journey. The continent possesses abundant natural

resources, a rapidly growing population, expanding markets, and immense investment opportunities. Yet it

remains one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental

degradation, resource depletion, infrastructure deficits, energy insecurity, and widening social inequalities.

These challenges have significant implications for governments, businesses, investors, financial institutions, and communities. Climate-related disasters continue to affect agricultural productivity, water security, energy systems, infrastructure, supply chains, public health, and economic resilience. At the same time, global capital markets are undergoing a profound transformation, with increasing emphasis on

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance, sustainable finance, responsible investment,

climate disclosure, and green economic development.

Worldwide, investors are increasingly directing capital toward organizations and projects that demonstrate

strong ESG performance and measurable contributions to sustainable development. Green bonds,

sustainability-linked loans, blended finance, climate funds, impact investing, carbon markets, and nature-

based finance have become major drivers of global investment.

Africa has enormous potential to benefit from this transformation. However, the continent continues to

experience a significant financing gap for sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, climate adaptation,

biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, resilient cities, clean technologies, and inclusive

development.

Unlocking sustainable finance is therefore essential for achieving long-term economic growth while

addressing environmental and social challenges.

Recognizing this opportunity, the African CEO Council is establishing the African Sustainable Finance

Summit (ASFS) as an annual continental platform to mobilize finance, strengthen partnerships, influence

policy, and accelerate Africa's transition toward sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon economies.

1

Context and Rationale

The financial sector plays a decisive role in determining the future direction of economic development.

Banks, institutional investors, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, insurance companies, venture capital

firms, development finance institutions, multilateral banks, private equity firms, and capital markets

influence how financial resources are allocated across economies.

Increasingly, these institutions are integrating sustainability into lending decisions, investment strategies,

risk management, governance, and portfolio management.

Despite this global shift, many African economies continue to face barriers, including:

Limited access to sustainable and green finance.

Low levels of ESG integration.

Inadequate climate finance.

Weak sustainable investment frameworks.

Underdeveloped carbon markets.

Limited sustainable infrastructure financing.

Insufficient investment in renewable energy.

Low awareness of ESG reporting standards.

Inadequate public-private collaboration.

Capacity constraints within financial institutions and corporations.

Addressing these challenges requires coordinated action among governments, financial institutions,

investors, businesses, regulators, development partners, academia, and civil society.

The African Sustainable Finance Summit has therefore been designed as a high-level platform for dialogue,

collaboration, innovation, policy engagement, investment promotion, and knowledge sharing.
