The African Business Sustainability Awards (ABSA) is the African CEO Council's flagship continental awards programme established to recognize, celebrate, and promote outstanding achievements in sustainability, responsible business leadership, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), corporate governance, climate action, innovation, and sustainable development across Africa.
Organized annually by the African CEO Council in collaboration with strategic partners from the public and private sectors, international organizations, development finance institutions, professional bodies, academia, and the diplomatic community, the Awards honour organizations and individuals whose leadership and innovative initiatives are creating lasting economic, social, and environmental value.
The Awards recognize businesses, government institutions, development organizations, financial institutions, entrepreneurs, SMEs, multinational corporations, public sector agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and distinguished individuals that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to responsible business practices, sustainable investment, corporate governance, climate resilience, environmental stewardship, social inclusion, and ethical leadership.
The African Business Sustainability Awards are designed to inspire excellence, encourage innovation, promote best practices, and showcase organizations that are setting new benchmarks for sustainable business and corporate responsibility throughout Africa.
The Awards also provide an important platform for sharing successful business models, promoting policy dialogue, encouraging investment, strengthening partnerships, and advancing Africa's transition towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy.
The African Business Sustainability Awards are presented during the annual African Business Sustainability Summit Gala Dinner, one of Africa's most prestigious gatherings of business leaders, policymakers, investors, ambassadors, development partners, academics, and senior government officials.

Award recipients are recognized before a distinguished audience of chief executives, cabinet ministers, heads of diplomatic missions, international organizations, investors, regulators, business associations, development agencies, and members of the international business community.
Being selected as a finalist or recipient of an African Business Sustainability Award represents one of the continent's highest recognitions of excellence in responsible business leadership.
Award recipients are expected to attend the Awards Gala to receive their awards and participate in media interviews, networking activities, and official photography.

The African Business Sustainability Awards are presented annually under the following categories:
1. African Business Sustainability Leadership Award
Presented to an outstanding Chief Executive Officer, Chairperson, business leader, or organization that has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing sustainability, ESG, responsible investment, and sustainable economic development across Africa.
2. Corporate Sustainability Excellence Award
Recognizes an organization that has successfully integrated sustainability into its corporate strategy, operations, governance, and stakeholder engagement while delivering measurable environmental, social, and economic impact.
3. ESG Leadership Award
Presented to an organization that has demonstrated excellence in implementing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, sustainability reporting, ethical governance, stakeholder engagement, and responsible business practices.
4. Climate Action and Green Economy Award
Recognizes organizations making significant contributions toward climate resilience, renewable energy, carbon reduction, circular economy initiatives, biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, and green innovation.
5. Sustainable Finance Award
Presented to financial institutions, investors, development finance institutions, or investment organizations demonstrating leadership in green finance, ESG investing, impact investing, blended finance, climate finance, and sustainable capital mobilization.
6. Corporate Governance Excellence Award
Recognizes organizations that have demonstrated exemplary standards of governance, board leadership, transparency, accountability, compliance, risk management, and ethical corporate conduct.
7. Responsible Business Leadership Award
Presented to an organization or individual whose leadership has significantly promoted responsible business practices, stakeholder value creation, ethical conduct, and sustainable enterprise development.
8. SME Sustainability Award
Recognizes small and medium-sized enterprises that have demonstrated innovation, resilience, sustainable growth, responsible business practices, and positive social and environmental impact.
9. Innovation for Sustainability Award
Honours organizations that have developed innovative technologies, business models, products, or services addressing environmental challenges, social development, resource efficiency, or sustainable industrialization.
10. Investment Promotion Award
Presented to organizations that have made outstanding contributions to attracting investment, promoting entrepreneurship, facilitating business expansion, and strengthening Africa's investment ecosystem.
11. Public Sector Sustainability Award
Recognizes government ministries, agencies, regulatory authorities, municipalities, or public institutions implementing innovative policies and programmes that advance sustainable development and responsible governance.
12. Women in Sustainable Business Leadership Award
Celebrates exceptional women executives whose leadership has advanced sustainable enterprise, inclusive growth, gender equality, innovation, and corporate excellence.
13. Youth Sustainability Leadership Award
Recognizes outstanding young entrepreneurs, innovators, and business leaders under the age of 40 who are driving sustainability, technology, entrepreneurship, and social innovation across Africa.
14. Outstanding Research and Thought Leadership Award
Presented to universities, research institutions, think tanks, or individual researchers whose work has significantly influenced sustainability policy, corporate governance, ESG, responsible investment, or sustainable development.
15. Partnership for Sustainable Development Award
Recognizes outstanding collaborative initiatives involving governments, businesses, development partners, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and international organizations that have delivered measurable sustainable development outcomes.
16. African CEO Sustainability Champion Award
The Council's highest individual honour, presented to an exceptional Chief Executive Officer whose leadership has transformed business performance while advancing sustainability, ethical leadership, responsible investment, and inclusive economic growth.
17. Lifetime Achievement Award
The Council's highest lifetime recognition, presented to an eminent African or international business leader who has made exceptional and sustained contributions to responsible business leadership, corporate governance, sustainability, entrepreneurship, economic transformation, and private sector development over several decades.
Award recipients are selected through an independent and transparent evaluation process based on measurable performance and internationally recognized best practices.
Assessment criteria include:
An independent Awards Jury comprising distinguished business leaders, academics, sustainability experts, investors, governance professionals, development practitioners, and representatives from strategic partner organizations evaluates all nominations.
The judging process is transparent, objective, merit-based, and guided by internationally recognized governance and ethical standards.
The African Business Sustainability Awards serve as a powerful platform for recognizing organizations that are redefining business success through responsible leadership and sustainable value creation.
