Eligibility and Admissions

Eligibility and Admissions CRITERIA

Who is Eligible to Join the African CEO Council

Membership Eligibility and Admissions

Membership of the African CEO Council is selective and subject to formal review and approval. The Council brings together credible chief executives, board leaders, founders, investors and qualifying institutional leaders committed to responsible leadership and Africa’s enterprise development.

Membership is granted to approved individual leaders, not automatically to their companies or institutions. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Who Is Eligible?

Membership may be considered for:

  • Chief executive officers and managing directors
  • Executive chairpersons and company presidents
  • Business founders leading established enterprises
  • Board chairpersons and experienced directors
  • Leaders of investment and financial institutions
  • Chief executives of public enterprises and government agencies
  • Heads of professional associations and development organisations
  • Managing partners of established professional-services firms
  • African diaspora business leaders
  • International executives with substantial African operations or investment interests

Applicants may represent large corporations, medium-sized businesses, growth companies, established startups, public institutions, professional firms or development organisations.

Principal Admission Criteria

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Substantial executive or board-level responsibility
  • A credible record of professional achievement
  • Leadership of a lawful and operational organisation
  • Integrity and responsible professional conduct
  • Commitment to African enterprise and economic development
  • Willingness to contribute knowledge and experience
  • Acceptance of the Council’s Code of Conduct
  • Compliance with conflict-of-interest and confidentiality requirements

The Council seeks appropriate regional, sectoral and gender representation.

Public-Sector Leaders

Chief executives of public enterprises, government agencies, investment institutions and regulatory organisations may be considered where their responsibilities relate to business, trade, investment or economic development.

Members must respect the Council’s non-partisan status. Council membership may not be used for partisan political activity.

Individual Membership

Membership belongs to the approved individual and does not automatically extend to:

  • The individual’s company
  • Employees or colleagues
  • Subsidiaries or affiliated organisations
  • Successors in office
  • Family members

An employer may pay the applicable membership contribution, but the membership remains attached to the approved individual.

Companies and institutions may separately participate as partners, sponsors, advertisers or programme collaborators. Partnership or sponsorship does not confer membership.

Admissions Process

1. Enquiry, Invitation or Nomination

A candidate may be identified through a Council invitation, member nomination, institutional referral or confidential expression of interest.

2. Preliminary Review

The Membership Secretariat assesses the candidate’s position, organisation and general suitability.

3. Submission of Information

Eligible candidates may be requested to provide a professional biography, organisational information, references and relevant declarations.

4. Verification

The Council may verify the candidate’s identity, executive position, professional history, organisational standing and publicly available reputational information.

5. Admissions Review

The Membership and Admissions Committee may recommend approval, conditional approval, further review, deferral or decline.

6. Confirmation and Onboarding

Membership becomes effective only after formal approval, fulfilment of applicable conditions and payment of the authorised membership contribution.

Approved members may receive:

  • An official admission letter
  • Membership certificate
  • Membership identification number
  • Access to members-only resources
  • Access to the private membership directory
  • Programme and engagement information

Grounds for Declining Membership

Membership may be declined where an applicant:

  • Provides false or misleading information
  • Misrepresents a position or organisation
  • Has unresolved serious regulatory or professional sanctions
  • Seeks membership primarily to obtain awards, contracts or political access
  • Presents a material conflict of interest
  • Engages in conduct inconsistent with the Council’s values
  • Could significantly damage the Council’s independence or reputation

The Council retains discretion over all admission decisions.

Membership Contributions

Membership contributions support the Council’s programmes, research, member services and institutional development.

Payment should be made only through an officially authorised Council account or payment channel.

Renewal and Continued Eligibility

Membership is ordinarily renewable annually. Renewal may consider:

  • Continued professional eligibility
  • Payment of applicable contributions
  • Compliance with the Code of Conduct
  • Accuracy of membership information
  • Participation and engagement
  • Regulatory or reputational developments

Members should notify the Council when they change employment, position or organisation.

Confidentiality

Information submitted during the admissions process will be treated responsibly and used for membership administration, verification and governance.

The membership directory is restricted to authorised members and may not be reproduced, sold or used for unsolicited mass marketing.

Membership Enquiries

Eligible leaders may submit a confidential membership enquiry containing their name, current position, organisation, country and professional contact information.
