AFRICAN sme forum

about the African sme forum

Empowering Small and Medium Enterprises for Africa's Sustainable Economic Transformation

Executive Profile

The African SME Forum (ASMEF) is a flagship pan-African membership network established by the African CEO Council to strengthen the growth, competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across Africa. The Forum brings together successful entrepreneurs, SME founders, business owners, growth-stage enterprises, professional service firms, investors, policymakers, financial institutions, development partners, business associations, and innovation ecosystems to promote enterprise development, industrialization, regional trade, and inclusive economic growth.

The Forum serves as a continental platform for networking, executive education, business development, policy advocacy, research, innovation, investment promotion, mentorship, market access, and strategic partnerships. Through high-impact programmes and practical business support, ASMEF equips SMEs with the knowledge, skills, finance, technology, and networks needed to scale their businesses, create employment, increase exports, and compete successfully in regional and global markets.

Recognizing that SMEs account for the overwhelming majority of businesses in Africa and generate a substantial share of employment and economic activity, the African SME Forum is committed to creating an enabling ecosystem where enterprises can innovate, grow, access finance, improve productivity, embrace digital transformation, and contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063, and the opportunities created by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Context

Small and Medium Enterprises are the backbone of Africa's economy. Across the continent, SMEs are responsible for a significant proportion of private-sector employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and income generation. They contribute substantially to national GDPs, local value creation, and poverty reduction while serving as the foundation of industrial development and inclusive growth.

Despite their importance, many African SMEs continue to face persistent challenges, including limited access to finance, high borrowing costs, inadequate infrastructure, limited managerial capacity, poor access to regional and international markets, weak digital adoption, regulatory burdens, limited technology transfer, and fragmented business support services.

The implementation of AfCFTA presents an unprecedented opportunity for African SMEs to expand into regional markets, participate in continental value chains, and increase exports. However, realizing these opportunities requires stronger institutions, better business support, improved competitiveness, enhanced innovation, and sustained collaboration among governments, financial institutions, development partners, and the private sector.

The African SME Forum has been established to address these challenges by creating a continental platform that supports enterprise growth through collaboration, policy engagement, capacity building, investment facilitation, and market access.

Background

Africa is entering a period of rapid demographic growth, urbanization, technological advancement, and economic integration. SMEs will play a decisive role in transforming these trends into sustainable economic opportunities. They are central to industrialization, job creation, innovation, food security, manufacturing, services, digital commerce, and export development.

Governments, development finance institutions, and international organizations increasingly recognize SMEs as essential drivers of economic diversification and inclusive prosperity. Nevertheless, support programmes are often fragmented and unevenly distributed across countries.

The African SME Forum seeks to bridge these gaps by creating a unified regional platform where entrepreneurs, business leaders, investors, policymakers, and technical experts collaborate to strengthen Africa's SME ecosystem and promote enterprise-led development.

Rationale

The African SME Forum is established to:

  • Strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of African SMEs.
  • Improve access to finance, investment, and blended finance solutions.
  • Promote regional trade and export readiness under AfCFTA.
  • Build leadership, management, and governance capacity among entrepreneurs.
  • Foster innovation, technology adoption, and digital transformation.
  • Encourage sustainable business practices and ESG integration.
  • Facilitate strategic partnerships between SMEs, large corporations, governments, and development institutions.
  • Advocate policies that improve the business environment for SMEs.
  • Promote women-owned, youth-led, and rural enterprises.
  • Accelerate industrialization, local manufacturing, and value addition.

Vision

To become Africa's leading platform for SME leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, and enterprise development, enabling African businesses to compete successfully in regional and global markets.
