AFRICAN WOMEN CEO ROUNDTABLE

about the African Women CEO Roundtable (AWCR)

Empowering Women Leaders. Transforming African Business. Advancing Inclusive Prosperity.

Executive Profile

The African Women CEO Roundtable (AWCR) is a flagship pan-African leadership and business network established by the African CEO Council (ACC) to bring together accomplished women chief executive officers, entrepreneurs, founders, board directors, senior executives, professionals, investors, policymakers, and thought leaders from across Africa and the African diaspora.

The Roundtable provides a high-level platform for networking, executive leadership development, mentorship, advocacy, knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, strategic partnerships, and business collaboration. It seeks to strengthen the leadership and influence of women in business while promoting inclusive economic growth, innovation, sustainability, and responsible corporate governance throughout Africa.

AWCR is founded on the belief that increasing women's participation in leadership and decision-making is both a matter of equity and a strategic economic imperative. Research consistently shows that organizations with diverse leadership often demonstrate stronger governance, improved innovation, better financial performance, and greater resilience. By supporting women leaders across sectors, the Roundtable contributes to stronger institutions, more competitive businesses, and sustainable economic development.

Context

Africa is home to one of the world's fastest-growing populations and a dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem. Women play a vital role in driving economic activity across agriculture, manufacturing, services, trade, finance, technology, healthcare, education, and the creative economy. They own millions of businesses, lead multinational corporations, manage public institutions, and contribute significantly to employment and innovation.

Despite this progress, women remain underrepresented in executive leadership, corporate boardrooms, investment decision-making, and high-growth sectors such as engineering, mining, infrastructure, energy, logistics, and technology. Many continue to face barriers in accessing finance, professional networks, leadership opportunities, markets, and mentorship.

Addressing these challenges is essential to unlocking Africa's full economic potential and achieving inclusive and sustainable growth.

Background

Across the continent, governments, development institutions, investors, and the private sector increasingly recognize the importance of women's leadership in economic transformation. Regional and international commitments—including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG 5: Gender Equality), the African Union Agenda 2063, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)—highlight the importance of advancing women's economic participation and leadership.

The African Women CEO Roundtable has been established to complement these efforts by creating a continent-wide platform where women leaders can connect, learn, collaborate, mentor one another, and collectively influence policies and business practices that foster inclusive growth.

Rationale

The African Women CEO Roundtable is established to:

  • Increase the representation of women in executive leadership and corporate governance.
  • Build leadership, management, and strategic decision-making capacity.
  • Expand access to professional networks, investment, and business opportunities.
  • Encourage women's participation in high-growth and traditionally underrepresented sectors.
  • Promote mentorship and succession planning for emerging women leaders.
  • Strengthen collaboration among business, government, academia, and development partners.
  • Advocate for enabling policies that promote gender-inclusive economic development.
  • Showcase successful African women leaders as role models and champions of change.

To become Africa's premier network of women business leaders, advancing inclusive leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic transformation across the continent.
